Dining Room
Design Challenges:
The owners of this Rancho Peñasquitos home wanted to create an inviting first impression with a formal dining room that was bright, spacious and airy—and didn’t require them to rearrange the furniture just to add a leaf to the dining table. They also wanted to highlight an antique china cabinet that was currently crammed into a tight space, and they longed for a fireplace that could be enjoyed from both the dining room and adjoining living room without dominating either space.
Design Solutions:
Our first obstacle to overcome was the transfer of the roof load at the existing ceiling to the new ceiling transition point. We adjusted the height of the new ceiling so that the transition point came above the existing stair railing. By adding a post and beam at this point, we were able to support the roof without taking away from the flow. In addition, we added 120 square feet of space with soaring 12-foot ceilings to create an open, inviting ambiance in the formal dining room. A raised, wraparound fireplace visible from the living and dining room alike enhances both casual get-togethers and special occasions.
Family Room
Design Challenges:
The homeowners also wanted to expand their family room into the perfect environment for watching sporting events on a big flat-screen TV, enjoying a movie or just relaxing in front of a fire. Because they often got together with large groups, they wondered how to add space without encroaching on the outdoor patio area or creating a “bowling alley” feel.
Design Solutions:
We pushed the back wall out ten feet to add 150 square feet. A wall of sliding glass doors looking out onto the yard balanced the space and made the room feel well-proportioned and comfortable. The sliding doors visually extend the living space and create a smooth transition between the indoor/outdoor entertainment areas. A big-screen TV and stone fireplace provide focal points and enhance the family’s get-togethers.
